The SASA Private Practice Business Unit's (PPBU) mission is to promote safe, professional, quality patient care through innovation, collaboration and leadership, and to ensure sustainability and value within the healthcare sector. Over the past years, SASA's PPBU has built up volumes of useful information and guidelines to equip members to manage private practice and navigate the diverse and dynamic challenges related to this.


You are invited to join us on the 7 April 2024 for our face to face workshop at The Rooftop Terrace, Salt River, Cape Town, where we will cover topics such as how to run a private practice, different practice structures, coding, tax and VAT, medical insurance, managing scheme audits and consenting patients.

  • Michael Blackburn

    Michael Blackburn

    Mike is a specialist anaesthesiologist in private practice with the Dunkeld Anaesthetic Practice in Johannesburg and SASA Council Member since 2022, holding the co-convenor role of the PPBU.

    He qualified in 2007 and worked for 5 years as a consultant at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital before joining private practice in 2013.

    Mike was co-opted onto the SASA Private Practice Business Unit (PPBU) in early 2020, as well as the SASA Covid working group in April 2020. He assisted with the writing of highly important and urgent guidelines relating to Covid-19 that SASA issued in the guidance of our members and so many others. He has also undergone mediation training with Mediation Matters.

    Mike is particularly passionate about the issues affecting private practice anaesthesia in South Africa and would like to continue with his work in the PPBU. He is married with two teenagers, and is a keen jogger. In addition to this, Mike holds a pilot’s license and competes in organized flying competitions during his spare time.

  • Lliam Barrett Brannigan

    Lliam Barrett Brannigan

    Lliam Brannigan is in private practice in Johannesburg, holding the position of HOD Critical Care at Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre (WDGMC) since February 2019. His speciality is anaesthesia for organ transplants.

    Lliam has served on SASA Council since 2020. He actively contributed to the SASA Education Business Unit (EBU) and is now the Convenor of the Regulation Business Unit (RBU).

    Lezelle Britz

    CEO of SASA

    Lezelle Britz is the CEO of the South African Society of Anaesthesiologists. Lezelle has been instrumental in the drive to enhance governance, process and structure and places a high value on effective communication as illustrator of Society intent and operations.

    Lezelle is a highly motivated and qualified professional, and her experience, ethics and sense of purpose endorses trust; it enables business stability, strategic objectives, and growth imperatives.
    Lezelle Britz has over 20 years’ experience in various sectors. She holds a BCom Law Degree & a Postgraduate Diploma in Labor Law from the University of Johannesburg.

    She spent a large proportion of her career in corporate, focused on affecting business improvement policies and re-designing processes improving efficiencies, productivity, and workplace wellness.

    In her recent role, as MD of Blue Horizon Licensing, she looked after brand licensing of consumer products in South African and Sub-Saharan Africa for Mattel, an US-based multinational toy manufacturing and entertainment company, who represents brands like Barbie, Fisher Price, Hot Wheels, and Uno.

    Notably she has also worked in IT, Recruitment & Education and in the Futurist Consulting circuit.
    She is a strong business optimizer with a specific focus on resources, both people and budget, & process optimization. A team player who believes in leadership through empowerment and example and supports dedicated teams.

  • Caroline Beth Corbett (SASA President)

    Caroline Beth Corbett

    SASA President

    Caroline Corbett completed her undergraduate degree at Wits in 2002 and then moved to Cape Town where she completed her internship and community service.

    She obtained her Diploma in Anaesthetics whilst working at 2 Military Hospital as a senior medical officer in 2005 and then returned to Johannesburg where she completed her registrar training and obtained her FCA through Wits in 2009.

    In 2010, Caroline moved into Private Practice in Johannesburg and developed special interests in Ambulatory Anaesthesia and Procedural Sedation, whilst maintaining a strong affinity for Paediatric Anaesthesia. In 2014, she and her family returned to Cape Town, where she joined Cape Anaesthetics Incorporated as an associate. She left Cape Anaesthetics to establish her own anaesthetic practice, called Exhale Anaesthesia. Caroline is also a director and co-founder of a medical technology company.

    In 2015, Caroline was co-opted onto the SASA Private Practice Business Unit (PPBU), where she is still actively involved and took on the role of SASA Vice President in 2020. In 2022, Caroline was appointed as the SASA President.

  • Ryan Davids

    Ryan Davids

    Dr Ryan Davids [MBChB, DA (SA), MMED (Anaes), FCA, MPhil (Applied Ethics)] is a dynamic young man, born and bred in Cape Town. He is a Stellenbosch alumnus currently working at Tygerberg Hospital.

    Ryan is an anaesthetist with varied interests. He is part of the Critical Care team at Tygerberg Hospital. He also works as a senior lecturer in department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care at Stellenbosch University where he heads the research division of this department.

    Ryan holds a master’s qualification in Anaesthesiology and Critical Care and holds a master’s in philosophy and Applied Ethics. In terms of his Bioethics involvement, Ryan serves on a number of local and national research and clinical ethics committees, including the SA medical research council and ethics consultant to the Mediclinic group nationally. Ryan is affiliated with the Division of Medical Law and Bioethics at Stellenbosch University where he serves as a senior lecturer and member of the executive committee of this division. He hopes to use this unique skill and knowledge set to further advance and serve the anaesthesia community.

    His passions extend beyond academia. He is a family man, a father to a very busy 3-year-old. Ryan openly admits to being governed by his wife and his daughter Isabella. They occasionally allow him to practice his martial arts. Ryan holds black belts in Kyokushin and Samurai fighting styles. He enjoys running and is currently training for the Two Oceans marathon.

  • Andrea Jacobs

    Andrea Jacobs

    Andrea is an anaesthesiologist in private practice as well as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Atlantic Anaesthetics in Cape Town. After qualifying, she pursued a short course in global health, medical negligence and health sector mediation. Andrea is currently in the process of obtaining a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) in healthcare leadership from the Stellenbosch University Business School. Beyond that, Andrea serves on the Private Practice Business Unit (PPBU). She believes in the power of collaboration and is dedicated to ensuring that SASA flourishes through cooperative efforts and innovation.

  • Chris Ngaka

    Chris Ngaka

    Dr Chris Ngaka is an anaesthesiologist in private practice in Cape Town with Southern Anaesthetics Associates.

    During his time in Gqeberha, Chris provided a quarterly outreach programme to Taylor Bequest Hospital in Mount Fletcher, which focused on obstetric anaesthesia training for nurses and medical officers. He believes in growth through mentorship and is always willing to take up opportunities to serve and mentor.

    He is a husband and a father of two beautiful children. Chris considers himself a ‘mountain goat’, as he spends hours on end running on Table Mountain or riding his mountain bike.

    Chris has served on SASA Council since 2023 and is the current Wellness Convenor.

    Vuyokazi November

    Vuyo November is a Specialist Anaesthesiologist in private practice at Kiaat Private Hospital in Mbombela, Mpumalanga. Her areas of interest are in theatre efficiency and patient safety in the perioperative period.

    She is part of the panel of examiners for the DA exam.

    As a SASA member, she serves as the secretary for the HITSA (Health Improvement Team of SA) committee, a SIG of SASA.

    Vuyo is a mother to a teenage girl, she spends her free time reading African Literature, especially enjoys the fictional works of Zakes Mda and Chinua Achebe.

  • Lisa Ryan

    Lisa Ryan

    Lisa Ryan is currently in Private Practice in Durban. Her undergraduate degree was obtained from UCT in 2004, whereafter she spent her first few years in the Pietermaritzburg Metropolitan Complex.

    After Community Service she worked in the Department of Paediatrics, obtained the Diploma in Child Health in 2007, before moving to Anaesthetics and writing the DA in 2008.

    After completion of registrar time at UKZN in 2012, Lisa went back to PMB as a junior consultant where she was involved in the Medical Officer and Registrar training programmes, and various research projects. In 2015 she was awarded the Douw Greeff Award for the Best Review Article in SAJAA for the article "Preoperative B-type natriuretic peptides in patients undergoing noncardiac surgery: a cumulative meta-analysis". Lisa has been in Private Practice since 2015, and her areas of interest include Paediatric Surgery, ENT, and Ophthalmic Anaesthesia. When not working she enjoys travelling, a good glass of wine, running, and trying not to fall off her mountain bike (not necessarily in that order).

    Since her election to Council, Lisa has been an active member of the PPBU and is one of the co-convenors of the education efforts within the unit, working to deliver the Congress sessions and the practice workshops.

  • Karmelle Van Rensburg

    Karmelle Van Rensburg

    Karmelle has been an active member of the SASA for a number of years, serving as the SARFA Chair in 2018. The SARFA web portal and the #ScrubCapChallenge were some of the projects that Karmelle and her colleagues implemented. She was elected to SASA Council in 2020.

    Karmelle is also on the PPBU Committee Private Practice Business Unit (PPBU) Committee.

    She is married with a little boy, and when she has free time, enjoys cycling, running, cake baking, scuba diving and various arts and crafts.

  • Ina Vorster

    Ina Vorster

    Ina is in private practice in eMalahleni and is also a part time lecturer at Sefako Makgato University (SMU).

    She is involved in the development of SASA-endorsed practical anaesthetic nurse workshops, through which she believes the perceived deterioration of nursing care can be turned into the development of high impact anaesthetic teams.
    She is actively pursuing the eventual accreditation of anaesthetic nurses who form an essential part of the anaesthetic environment. Involvement in the editing of the Revised SASA guidelines 2018, construction of the new SASA Nurse abstract guidelines and peer­ reviewing for the African Journal of Emergency Medicine broadened her horizon.
    Ina holds numerous qualifications including:

     MMed (Anaes) UP;
     MBChb (UP);
     PGDL (USB) Leadership Development (Cum Laude);
     PGDL (USB) Best Achiever Award Leadership 2017;
     DGA (UP) Hospital Administration (Cum Laude);
     DGG (UP) Community Health; and
     DTG (UP) Tropical Diseases.

    Ina has been served on SASA Council since 2020 and is extremely passionate about the upskilling of nurses, heading up the SASA Nurse Committee since 2022.
